One of these days someone hopefully an anthropologist will research a study on the effects on a host culture of allowing sub-cultures which operate independently of the host to become entrenched in their society for example Parsi people in India or other minorities that have become established within a community for 100 years or more. In Asia where people have learned over the years that tolerance beats warring every time, there are many smaller groups of 'others' living as part of a larger community. Most don't get harassed at all or if they do get harassed, that is because some local politician reckoned there were votes in it and it will blow over after election season. Interesting to see how much that attitude changes with a currently bigger emphasis on individuality.
I feel certain that an accurate study of both internal and external economic activities would have the ability to quiet misplaced bias against a particular people or philosophy whilst others may point towards a parasite that is both ineffective and destructive because ultimately the presence of this group of people within a much larger community kills the host and that will be fatal for parasite & host.
How do such sects interact with society at large? What can they do to ensure their presence is positive for the larger community and what must they be prevented from doing? That bit is easy to devise because right now we have no idea of the effects of permitting multi-generational sub-groups within a community. The only time we ever question it is when it is too late eg zio-nazis covertly interfering in other nations' political processes.
