Putin floated Russia joining NATO but they blocked him because then NATO member states could spend their 2.5% of their GDP on Russian fighter jets and air defense systems instead of American ones. This is the true point of NATO not any strategic alliance. The war is about whether Russia or America gets to sell fighter jets to Ukraine in exchange for Ukrainian grain and rare earth minerals.

Maybe historically, NATO was perceived as a threat, but, like all apples, it rots from the inside. Putin's authoritarian grip is not as appreciated after the senseless jailing and murder of the opposition leader, Navalny, in 2024, and the senseless invasion of Ukraine in 2014 and again in 2022 (for again, inconsistent reasoning, none of which explains the logic of an authoritarian). To understand why authoritarians do what they do, we have to grasp the basics of power politics. It is simply, let me do what I want, when I want to. Anything less is considered a threat, and for the most part, NATO expansion was merely symbolic to the effort made by Putin to invade other sovereign states. He wasn't the only one, and certainly, the West should know better by now. Navalny ran on an anti-corruption platform he launched in 2011. Putin's effort to take what wasn't his to take or power that shouldn't be concentrated was the problem that led to further corruption and desperation. The fall of the former USSR had unintended consequences. All state-owned property was sold off (for pennies on the dollar), and only certain people bought it. Putin and his friends were waiting, which is why it is often thought that the richest man in the world owns nothing in his own name. All apples rot from the inside out. Ask Orban. Orban started the same year as Navalny launched his platform in 2011, known as the "Eastern Opening" policy. You either keep an authoritarian at arm's length while keeping clear boundaries, or you get used up.

OK, nothing to do with the article -- yet, but why in the world do people say "One Off" when it is obvious (to me anyway) that it is "One Of".
Sorry, it has been bugging me for over a decade and every time I see "One Off" my mind screams in defiance. LOL
"One off" or "a one-off" is a British expression meaning "never to be repeated". It originated in foundry work where a special piece was manufactured only once. In slang it means the same about an event that happens only once. Your mind needs to expand about language. I'm American and I've always known what "one off" means.
